Artistry and Excellence

The Oregon Symphony has played a leading role in establishing Oregon's proud reputation for high quality of life and cultural richness.

In addition to attracting internationally known guest artists, the Oregon Symphony is fortunate to have outstanding talent among its own musicians who solo regularly with the orchestra. The diverse Symphony season includes two classical series, the pops series, children's concerts, Sunday matinees, experimental offerings and a variety of special presentations featuring everything from Handel to Hendrix.

Oregon Symphony in the Schools

A growing part of the Symphony's reach beyond the concert hall focuses on increasing the power of music in the schools. Specifically designed for students grades K through 8, Youth Concerts are age-specific and support curricular goals of state content standards in multiple subject areas. To enrich the educational experience, the Oregon Symphony Education and Community Programs Department provides a comprehensive curriculum guide and audio tapes for teachers. Other educational opportunities include docent visits to the schools, backstage tours, classroom workshops, in-school performances and scholarships to young musicians.

Although numerous studies have proven the educational benefits of music, local and statewide funding of school music programs has decreased. The Symphony sees the increasing value of its role to enhance musical opportunities available to children.

Your support reaches out …

Oregon Symphony in the Northwest

The Oregon Symphony's community programs reach beyond the Portland metropolitan area. Performing in concert settings of every shape and size, the orchestra reaches out to visit, perform for, teach and support communities throughout Oregon and its bordering states. For the school children who benefit from the broad range of supporting educational activities—youth concerts, classroom workshops, master classes and ensemble performances—the experience is unforgettable.

Why Should You Help?

Our region is justifiably proud of the Oregon Symphony. But a major symphony orchestra cannot survive on warm wishes alone— it takes a meaningful investment on the part of our community to enable the quality of orchestral performances and educational programs that we have come to expect from the Oregon Symphony. Ticket sales cover only half of the real costs of maintaining the orchestra, therefore, we rely on contributions from corporations, foundations and individuals to make up the balance.
