THE OREGON SYMPHONY MOVES FORWARD IN
SEARCH FOR NEXT PRESIDENT
(PORTLAND, Ore.) – Oregon Symphony Board Chair Terry Pancoast announced the next steps in the process as the Symphony begins to search for a new president to succeed Elaine Calder, who is scheduled to leave on August 31.
Effective on August 31, General Manager Mary Crist and Vice president and Chief Financial Officer Janet Plummer will serve as interim co-presidents. Ms. Crist will have primary responsibility for artistic operations, community engagement, human resources, and orchestra matters. Ms. Plummer will have primary responsibility for finance and administration, marketing, customer service, and development. Other matters will be handled jointly, or delegated as appropriate, and both will report to the Board of Directors.
The Board Executive Committee has appointed a search committee, which has been charged with the task of determining the process and leading the recruitment of a new president. The members of that committee are Music Director Carlos Kalmar; board members Terry Pancoast, Walt Weyler, Ted Austin, and Thomas Lauderdale; Symphony musicians Marty Hebert and Nancy Ives; and staff members Janet Plummer and Mary Crist. A patron of the Symphony also will be added to the committee in the near future.
Mr. Pancoast went on to note that “the current strengths of the organization, and our ability to confidently choose interim leadership from the current staff, are due in significant measure to Elaine’s efforts over the past six years. We thank her for that. And while we certainly will miss her, we all look forward to building on our solid foundation and making the Oregon Symphony even better and stronger in the future.”
Future updates on the search will be made as appropriate.
