ESPERANZA SPALDING JOINS OREGON SYMPHONY’S
ODE TO JOY NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATION
(PORTLAND, Ore.) – The Oregon Symphony’s new New Year’s tradition just took a sassy turn.
This year’s special guest for the annual Ode to Joy New Year’s Celebration is none other than Portland native, four-time Grammy winner and jazz sensation Esperanza Spalding! The double bassist, whose prodigious talents have been heralded by The New Yorker, The New York Times, Marie Claire among countless others, makes her debut with the Oregon Symphony. She’ll be joined by her mentor and local jazz hero Thara Memory.
Ms. Spalding is no stranger to the orchestral stage, having performed with the National Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony, the Nashville Symphony and the Polish Baltic Philharmonic.
Music Director Carlos Kalmar perhaps said it best: “Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and Esperanza Spalding? Now that’s a combination you don’t expect to see. We’re definitely going to have some fun!”
Fun is the operative word when it comes to the Symphony’s newly established New Year’s tradition. Last year two sold out audiences bid farewell to the old and welcomed the new year with the celebratory combination of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with its astounding Ode to Joy and a delightful cavalcade of stars with Pink Martini’s Thomas Lauderdale. Audiences waded joyously through waist-deep balloons that dropped from the ceiling of Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in a colorful tribute to the New Year.
The balloons will drop again this year as the new tradition continues, this time with one of Portland’s favorite musicians, Esperanza Spalding!
