CELLIST ALBAN GERHARDT JOINS OREGON SYMPHONY
FOR HIS THIRD AND FINAL YEAR AS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
(PORTLAND, Ore.) – Internationally acclaimed cellist and classical music ambassador extraordinaire Alban Gerhardt will be back in town November 10-17 for concerts with the Oregon Symphony. But Alban doesn’t come into town just to play at the Schnitz! While he’s here he’ll be taking his friend Johann Sebastian Bach and his cello on the road, visiting schools, arts and cultural centers, The Cleaners at the Ace Hotel, the University of Portland, as well as a few places that he decides on the spur of the moment.
And that’s just a sampling of his public and private appearances in his final year of his three-year stint as the Oregon Symphony’s first-ever Artist in Residence. His goal is to share classical music in general and beautiful cello compositions in particular with as wide an audience as possible.
The Oregon Symphony Artist in Residence program is one of the many ways the Symphony takes the beauty and the power of classical music to audiences in our community, beyond our home at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
Alban frequently performs a few Bach Cello Suites in each of his public appearances. In addition, he will perform in an octet comprised of the entire Oregon Symphony cello section: Principal Nancy Ives, Asst. Principal Marilyn de Oliveira, Trevor Fitzpatrick, Gayle Budd O’Grady, David Socolofsky, Emily Hu and Ken Finch.
These free, public appearances include:
11/11 from 11:00am-noon at the Chehalem Arts Center where he’ll perform a special children’s program with questions and answers.
11/12 from 1:30-3:00pm at Mittleman Jewish Community Center where he’ll play Bach Suites for a dance class focused on music, movement and the brain in conjunction with a presentation from the Oregon Health and Science University Brain Institute on Parkinson’s research.
11/13 from 8:00-9:30pm at The Cleaners at the Ace Hotel (1022 SW Stark) where he’ll be joined by the entire Oregon Symphony cello section, playing a program of cello favorites.
11/15 from 9:30-10:45am at Roseway Heights School in NE Portland where he and other Oregon Symphony players will coach the Metropolitan Youth Symphony in sectionals, as the students prepare for their upcoming concert of Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony.
11/15 at 2:00pm at the Buckley Center on the University of Portland campus where he and Oregon Symphony musicians (violinists Inéz Voglar and Vali Phillips) will join the Bravo Youth Orchestra for a joint community concert.
11/16 from 2:00-3:30pm at the German American Society in NE Portland, where he’ll play a selection of Bach Suites and engage in German Q&A about his music and career. German language students and their families will enjoy this opportunity for music and conversation.
11/17 from 4:00-5:30pm at Jackson Middle School in SW Portland where he’ll hold a master class with two Portland Youth Philharmonic cellists and a string quartet.
