Beyond the Schnitz

Oregon Symphony Community Engagement Programs

The Oregon Symphony and its musicians are deeply involved in the community in places that stretch far beyond the confines of our concert hall.  Here are a few of the things happening in that arena during the month of January.

Symphony Storytimes for preschoolers continue in local libraries. These musical storytimes are collaborations between youth librarians and the Oregon Symphony musicians. Each week a different instrument is represented from the four sections of the orchestra family. These FREE hour-long gatherings offer children picture book reading, musical accompaniment and a chance to try out each instrument each week.

The first of many Oregon Symphony musician residency visits to David Douglas School District’s Gilbert Heights Elementary begin in January with the generous support of the Oregon Community Foundation’s Studio to School Grant. The Symphony’s Percussion Quartet will offer two exciting informational assemblies for the K-5 graders. They’ll then divide up and visit all of the classrooms for a more individual connection with the students and staff, before finally putting on an evening Community Concert for the families and residents in the area at the David Douglas Performing Arts Center. In subsequent months, the other sections of the orchestra will be offering the same sort of educational connection with these students and community in support of the fine music education programs which still thrive in the David Douglas schools. The OCF grant also serves the Alice Ott Middle School orchestra by paying for private string lessons for students in need, provided by our partners, the teaching musicians of the 45th Parallel Ensemble. Our goal is to support these programs and to instill a curiosity and commitment by students to take up an instrument. The benefits of learning to play an instrument are well-documented and have a great impact on students as well as the entire community.
