Carlos Renews!
Dear Symphony Friends,
The best is yet to come! The news that Music Director Carlos Kalmar has extended his contract through the 2008-2009 season makes that promise a certainty. Since Carlos arrived in the fall of 2003 the orchestra has experienced exponential artistic growth, and we celebrate our good fortune in ensuring that growth will continue with him at the helm.
As Carlos said when we announced his extension, having a strong impact on the life of an orchestra requires more time. His commitment to an artistic vision for the Oregon Symphony is evidenced by his readiness to stay the course here in the midst of many other offers. I hope everyone in the Oregon community understands how lucky we are to keep someone of his talent and acclaim here in Portland. Artistic goals aside, Carlos has made it clear that he is staying also because this community made him feel welcome so quickly and because he truly loves his Oregon home. Those of you who have spied him at many non-Symphony events around town know that first-hand!
We are also grateful Carlos understands that our artistic health is directly tied to our financial health. A successful music director not only oversees the music, but is actively involved in cultivating support. Carlos' regular participation in pre- and post-concert events, and his very real desire to connect with every Symphony patron, is tremendously valuable in our effort to expand our donor base. His renewed commitment is incredibly timely, as the next year is a critical one in determining the level of support this community is willing to provide for our future.
I know you will join me in a much-deserved standing ovation for Carlos and the hard-working members of the Oregon Symphony. They have achieved, and will continue to achieve, great things together. This era will be one to remember.
Sincerely,
Maria A. Pope
Chair, Board of Directors
