David Buck
Principal Flute
At this moment …
We would find David at Powell's Books. "I love bookstores, and now that I live a few blocks away from the world's largest bookstore, I plan to spend as much time there as I can."
In the CD player …
David loves listening to new music as well as old classics. Two of his favorite contemporary composers are John Adams and Steve Reich. David likes listening to jazz, too (Miles Davis and Bill Evans especially); he has also recently become a big Wagner fan, and is looking forward to playing excerpts from the Ring Cycle later on this season.
On the night stand …
David is somewhat of a history buff, and is currently reading a book by Jonathan D. Spence called The Search for Modern China.
On the music stand …
Christopher Rouse's Flute Concerto. "It's hard to find really substantial flute concertos—there's a big gap between Mozart and the 20th century—so some of the best solo repertoire is actually pretty new. The Rouse is a great example of a piece written within the past 20 years that's really expanded the repertoire."
In the kitchen …
David is not a very talented cook, but does enjoy vegetarian cuisine. "I like to cook with tofu especially, because it still tastes good even if it's overcooked."
Before you left …
David would show you the Ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) he picked up in Japan this summer.
