Vice President / Senior Director of Operations & General Manager

Join the Oregon Symphony Team as our Vice President / Senior Director of Operations & General Manager!

The Oregon Symphony is seeking a strategic and collaborative leader to serve as our Vice President or Senior Director of Operations & General Manager. This role sits at the intersection of artistry and execution—ensuring that the Symphony’s artistic vision is translated into seamless, high-functioning, and sustainable operations. As a key member of the senior leadership team, this role aligns musicians, staff, and external partners around shared goals while overseeing orchestra operations, labor relations, and long-term planning. 

This role may be filled at either the Senior Director or Vice President level, depending on the scope of leadership experience and strategic impact demonstrated by the selected candidate.

Here’s how you’ll make a difference:

  • Partner with the President & CEO and senior leadership to shape and execute organizational strategy, with a focus on operations, orchestra personnel, and long-term sustainability
  • Provide strategic guidance on policy, labor, and operational matters across the organization
  • Lead long-range and annual planning processes, including development and oversight of the orchestra calendar
  • Represent Operations in Board and leadership settings, communicating priorities, risks, and progress.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of all orchestra activities, including concerts, rehearsals, tours, recordings, and community programs
  • Ensure compliance with safety, accessibility, and contractual requirements across all performance and rehearsal environments
  • Support the realization of artistic programming across Classical, Popular, Presentations, Education/Community Engagement, and external partnerships
  • Lead execution of electronic media projects (e.g., recordings, broadcasts) in partnership with Artistic leadership
  • Oversee musician personnel strategy in partnership with Artistic leadership and the Director of Orchestra Personnel, including auditions, hiring, and contract administration
  • Lead labor relations strategy, including negotiation, administration, and interpretation of collective bargaining agreements for musicians and stagehands
  • Foster strong, collaborative relationships with musicians, union representatives, and staff
  • Resolve complex personnel and labor-related matters in partnership with Orchestra Personnel, Production, and HR
  • Lead budgeting and forecasting for orchestra operations and programs
  • Ensure alignment between artistic priorities and financial sustainability
  • Oversee resource allocation and cross-departmental coordination to support efficient execution
  • Lead, develop, and support operations, production, and library staff, fostering a high-performing and collaborative culture
  • Support staff development and succession planning
  • Build and maintain relationships with venues, contractors, and community partners

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred. Minimum of 8 years of related experience in arts management, orchestral operations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with labor relations and union negotiations; strong understanding of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Strong leadership presence, emotional intelligence, and the ability to build trust and motivate diverse teams.
  • Proficiency in OPAS and advanced Microsoft Office skills; experience with project management tools is a plus.
  • Familiarity with orchestral repertoire and production environments preferred.

Status and Work Environment:

Salary Range: 
Senior Director level: $110,000 – $120,000 
Vice President level: $160,000 – $170,000

This role may be filled at either the Senior Director or Vice President level, depending on the scope of leadership experience and strategic impact demonstrated by the selected candidate.

Director of Orchestra Personnel

Join the Oregon Symphony Team as our Director of Orchestra Personnel!

As our Director of Orchestra Personnel, you will play a central role in ensuring the seamless coordination of all musician-related activities. Your leadership will connect artistic priorities with operational execution, supporting musicians, conductors, and staff in delivering exceptional performances. Here’s how you’ll make a difference:

  • Lead the day-to-day coordination of orchestra personnel operations, ensuring rehearsals and performances run smoothly and in alignment with artistic goals.
  • Assign musicians to services in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), collaborating closely with the Music Director and VP/General Manager.
  • Prepare and manage program rosters, ensuring accuracy and clear communication across all stakeholders.
  • Maintain and engage a strong roster of substitute and extra musicians to meet artistic and operational needs.
  • Oversee auditions and tenure review processes, ensuring compliance with the CBA and a positive candidate experience.
  • Negotiate and issue contracts for regular, acting, substitute, and extra musicians.
  • Administer musician leave processes and anticipate staffing needs, proactively identifying coverage gaps and associated costs.
  • Serve as a primary liaison among musicians, Union representatives, and management, fostering clear communication and strong working relationships.
  • Interpret and administer the CBA consistently, addressing concerns and resolving issues in collaboration with HR and organizational leadership.
  • Supervise and support the development of the Assistant Orchestra Personnel Manager.
  • Manage budgets related to extra and substitute musicians, balancing artistic needs with financial stewardship.
  • Coordinate payroll-related processes and reporting in partnership with Finance and HR, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Oversee logistics for runouts and tours, including travel and lodging coordination.
  • Provide on-call support to address time-sensitive personnel or operational needs that arise during orchestra services.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and working knowledge of OPAS.
  • Experience with budgeting and forecasting processes preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot logistical and operational challenges effectively, including those related to performance environments.

Join the Oregon Symphony Team as our Director of Financial Operations!

As our Director of Financial Operations, you will play a central role in ensuring the financial health and operational strength of the organization. Your leadership will guide the systems, processes, and insights that allow teams across the Symphony to make informed decisions and sustain our mission. Here’s how you’ll make a difference:

  • Lead the day-to-day financial operations of the Symphony, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and timeliness across accounting, reporting, and cash flow management.
  • Oversee the monthly close process and deliver clear, insightful financial reporting that supports organizational decision-making.
  • Strengthen and maintain internal controls, ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Partner with leaders across departments to translate financial data into actionable insights, supporting planning, program decisions, and resource allocation.
  • Drive the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting, aligning financial plans with organizational priorities and long-term sustainability.
  • Develop financial models, dashboards, and tools that enhance visibility into performance and support proactive planning.
  • Lead the annual audit process and coordinate required filings, including Form 990, in partnership with external auditors and the CFO.
  • Continuously improve financial systems, processes, and policies to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate closely with the CFO and cross-functional partners (HR, IT, Facilities) to ensure alignment across operational and financial systems.
  • Provide leadership and guidance within the finance function, ensuring strong execution of day-to-day operations and responsiveness to organizational needs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • 5–7 years of progressive experience in accounting, FP&A, or nonprofit finance, including managing financial operations in a complex, multi-revenue-stream environment.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards, with experience overseeing audits, budgeting, and forecasting processes.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and business partnering skills, with the ability to translate financial concepts for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in financial and business systems, including accounting software, databases (e.g., Tessitura), payroll systems, and Microsoft Office.
