Chien Vivianne Tan

Chien Vivianne Tan joined the Oregon Symphony as Principal Second Violin in 1999 after five seasons as a tenured member of the Pacific Symphony.

During the summer months, Chien Vivianne performs at the Oregon Bach Festival, and she has previously performed with the Colorado, Grand Teton, and the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago. Besides the Oregon Symphony, Chien Vivianne has appeared as soloist in Ohio, Nova Scotia Canada, and Southern California performing concertos by Bach, Brahms, Xavier Foley, Mozart, and Ravel's Tzigane.

Born in Halifax, Canada, she began playing the violin in public school at the age of ten. Chien Vivianne earned her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, where she received a full scholarship to study with Elizabeth Baker of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She received her B.Mus from the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with David Cerone and David Updegraff. As a student, she participated in masterclasses by Andrés Cárdenes, Yehudi Menuhin, and Ruggerio Ricci. She twice competed in the CIBC National Music Festival in Canada, held in Medicine Hat and Toronto.

In addition to her orchestral work, Chien Vivianne played as a substitute performer in a band at Teatro Zinzanni in Seattle, produced a video featuring the treble violin (tuned one octave higher than a standard violin) that was featured on National Public Radio, and participated at the Henry Mancini Institute UCLA campus. She has taken jazz violin workshops taught by John Blake Jr. and Christian Howes.
