Jun Märkl is a highly respected interpreter of core Germanic repertoire and has become renown for his refined and idiomatic explorations of the French Impressionists. He currently serves as Music Director of the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra and is the newly appointed Chief Conductor of the Residentie Orchestra of The Hague, Netherlands - having completed a four year term as Principal Guest Conductor of that same esteemed orchestra. He begins his tenure as Music Director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in September, 2024 after serving as Artistic Advisor to that orchestra for the past three seasons. Maestro Markl continues his long and warm association with the Oregon Symphony as its Principal Guest Conductor.

Mr. Markl’s expertise in the world of opera and long historical relationships with the state operas of Vienna, Berlin, Munich, the Semperoper Dresden and the Metropolitan Opera of New York have been complemented over the past many decades by his orchestral music directorships of the Orchestre National de Lyon, the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Basque National Orchestra of San Sebastian.

Markl regularly guest conducts the leading orchestras of North America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe with special connections in the United States to the St. Louis Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra; in Europe with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brussels Philharmonic, Tonkuenstler Orchestra Vienna and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrucken, in Australia and New Zealand with the Sydney Symphony, the Melbourne Symphony, and the New Zealand Symphony, and in Asia with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, and the Singapore Symphony.

Mr. Markl has conducted many of the world’s most prestigious orchestras including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, and many others.

In recognition of his achievements in France, he was honoured in 2012 with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Märkl has an extensive discography – among the more than 50 albums he has recorded are the complete Schumann symphonies with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Mendelssohn and Wagner with the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, and works by Ravel, Messiaen, and a highly acclaimed Debussy series with the Orchestre National de Lyon. He is currently working on a cycle of works by Saint-Saëns, R. Strauss and Hosokawa. Born in Munich, Märkl won the conducting competition of the Deutscher Musikrat in 1986 and studied at Tanglewood with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. Soon after he appeared in opera houses throughout Europe followed by his first music directorships at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken and the Nationaltheater Mannheim.
